Defra proposes to use the waters around Lindisfarne (129km2 area) as one of five candidate or pilot areas for the introduction of a Highly Protected Marine Area or HMPA. The HMPA would ban fishing, collection of materials, dredging, recreational angling (although the consultation contains a question on angling zones) and anchoring and mooring (apart from in emergencies).
It is my firm belief that this is the wrong location for a HMPA, largely because there would be negligible conservation impact from it, as the fishing taking place in and around Holy Island is already highly regulated which has led to the use of sustainable fishing practises, the rewards of which in terms of yield and the positive impact on the wider marine environment are clear for all to see.
