I recently surveyed Elsdon Village residents on sewage issues raised by constituents and presented Northumbrian Water the results to address urgently. My visit last week to Rothbury's Treatment Works gave me another chance to press their Chief Executive in person.

Building on the Government's recent action on water and sewage:

  • 9 Apr – £11m Water Restoration Fund open for applications
  • 26 Mar – new whistleblowing portal
  • 11 Mar – £180m fast-tracked investment to prevent 8000 spills
  • 20 Feb – fourfold inspections increase
  • 11 Feb – bonuses ban for bosses water companies with criminal breaches

Environment

We were the first Government to address sewage spills from storm overflows. We only know about the unacceptable spills because it’s the Conservatives who cared enough to check. In 2010, a pitiful 7% of overflows were monitored for sewage discharges. This is now 100%.
